J R Adams (Newcastle) Limited is a family firm in the true sense of the word, with no less than 7 family members being active in the business. Founded in the 1930’s by ‘Jakey Adams’ with a horse and cart, his first motorised vehicle was Ford Model A. Growing to double figures pre-1940’s nationalisation, Jakey bought more vehicles, when his son, Jimmy joined the business, always buying ‘British’, running AEC’s, Albion’s, ERF’s and Scammell’s. By the 1970’s, third generation James and John joined the business, and today, they run the fleet of 48 vehicles, retaining some of the staff and drivers from over 30 years ago, and even some of their original customers. Sadly, Jakey died in 1991, and this model commemorates him.
