Description
On June 29, 1905 a group of motoring enthusiasts met in London’s Trocadero restaurant. This was the inauguration of the Automobile Association, formed originally to help motorists avoid police speed traps. By 1906, the AA began taking stands on many road safety issues, including successfully erecting thousands of roadside warning signs. By 1939, the AA’s membership had grown to 725,000, equivalent to 35% of the UK car population. They championed the 1983 legislation making the wearing of seat belts compulsory, and the introduction of lead-free petrol in 1986.
